By shopping in your closet, these future customers may be able to sense credibility and reliability with the high-quality brands that you have in your Poshmark store.
After all, if you have what buyers want most, they won’t be able to resist your items. Additionally, buyers may be more willing to pay up for in-demand items, which will ultimately increase your profit margins.
Plus, Poshmark is a social online marketplace that values activity on the platform. Although it is not confirmed, it is believed that once sales start, they will keep rolling in because it plays into the Poshmark algorithm.
Places To Source The Best Brands on Poshmark
Thrift Stores
The most classic and thought of place to source is at a thrift store. This may be your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Vincent Depaul, or even the Goodwill Outlet.
Although thrift store prices have been increasing, there are still many treasures and deals to be found if you have the patience to sift through the racks and shelves. Once you do find a new-to-you best selling brand, it can be tempting to pick up the item no matter what.
Be sure to still inspect the item and make sure it is in good condition without any noticeable flaws.
Plus, here’s a tip for when you’re out in the wild thrifting.
Copy and paste this “best brands to sell on Poshmark” list into a Google Doc. That way, it is easy to search and find the top brands while you still may be learning some of them.
Plus, you can add more brands to the list as you find your own top-performing brands.
Buy-Sell-Trade Stores
Another great way to find new items is by shopping at buy-sell-trade stores. Buy-sell-trade stores receive their inventory from their customers.
Unlike thrift stores, items are not donated to buy-sell-trade stores. Customers are paid a certain amount per item. Some examples of these types of stores include Plato’s Closet (be sure to read our Plato's Closet review!), Clothes Mentor, Uptown Cheapskate, Hut No. 8, Buffalo Exchange, and even more local and national stores across the country.
These types of stores work well for those predominantly selling clothing, shoes, and handbags. However, some of these buy-sell-trade stores also have beauty products and a limited selection of other household items.
Either way, shopping at a buy-sell-trade store is one of the best ways to get inventory. That is because the employees at the store carefully evaluate the item for brand, condition, and look for any flaws. Although some bad pieces still sneak through, it is an extra layer of comfort for resellers.
Consignment Stores
Consignment stores are very similar to buy-sell-trade stores. The only difference is when the seller is paid.
If an item is consigned, the person handing over the item will not get paid until the item is sold. Plus, those selling with consignment typically get a bigger payout for their item(s). There is a greater chance for resellers to find luxury brands here, which can be an exciting find.
Garage Sales
At garage sales, there are so many hidden gems to find. Garage sales are usually a good option for all resellers due to the variety of items that are sold.
White at garage sales it can be difficult to perform research on items because they are typically small, and you may be worried that the garage sale hosts are looking and judging you. First of all, do whatever feels right!
However, if you want a discrete way to look up items fast, use Google Lens. This is Google’s tool that performs a reverse image search. All you have to do is snap a picture of an item, and it will pull up results for you.
This is also the strategy I use to find style numbers for my clothing items. However, Google Lens is unfortunately not perfect and is not always able to find the item.
It is worth a shot though because it’s an inconspicuous way to potentially find out a lot of information on an item in order for you to make an informed decision before purchasing.
Garage sales are also a great place for resellers to shop because it is the only socially acceptable place to use negotiation tactics. At the very least, it’s worth a shot to try and make a deal!
Bonus tip: It is important to remember and track your cost of goods at garage sales because this will be needed once it comes to tax time.
Online
Lastly, resellers can shop online to try and find the best brands to sell on Poshmark. However, this requires increased skill and capital.
Items will likely have a higher upfront cost when sourcing online, however, have the potential for a bigger payout.
Sellers can ironically find items to source in all of the popular places they already sell, including the Poshmark app itself.
The good news is that you can perform all of the brand and style research from the comfort of your own home, not worrying about other shoppers or workers around you looking or saying something.
How To Have Success Selling The Best Brands
As we already talked about, just because you find and list the best-selling brands, it does not guarantee sales. So here are a few tips to have success with these brands.
Looking Up Comps
If you find a brand on the best brands to sell on Poshmark list while thrifting, your heart will get a little flutter of excitement. Wait, is that just me?
Either way, channel that excitement, and don’t get too ahead of yourself! Now it’s time to look up the item if it’s a clothing item, you’ll need to find the style number.
And you’re in luck! We even have a guide in the game for finding a Lululemon or Free People style number. Otherwise, snap a quick picture and use the Google Reverse Image search technique we talked about in the garage sale portion.
Once you have information on the item, look it up on Poshmark. First, see what the current available market has and what the average listing price is set as.
Next, filter by “Sold” to see what the item has sold for historically. Use this information to find out if the item is even worth picking up.
If is is, great! Save the information you used to find the item including style numbers, style names, item descriptors, and even screenshot any stock photos you see, if that’s your style.
This will help give your listing process a head start.
Quality Listings
Once you’ve found a winner, it’s time to list the item. Start by taking quality photos with a plain white background and good lighting. This is especially important for the cover photo.
Write a keyword-optimized title including the brand, type of item, color, pattern, size, and other applicable descriptors. Use the same strategy for the item to make detailed descriptions, just elaborate and use more relevant keywords.
The use of keywords is especially for search engine optimization for your listings. All Poshmark items can be found via Google search results, so help yourself by helping your future customers find you!
Make sure your listing is truly your own, but you can gain information from the retailer's website or other Poshmark sellers with the same item.
Pricing Strategy
The step that may arguably be the most important is setting the price for your new Poshmark item. If you price too high, potential customers will likely show no interest. However, if you price too low, you risk undervaluing the item.
That is why performing market research is vital to setting your items within the perfect price points. In general, I find my best strategy when I start pricing on the higher end because that gives me plenty of room for negotiating and sending offers.
Negotiating With Potential Buyers
Negotiation on Poshmark is an absolute must. Seriously, no more with the “Price is firm” or “No lowball offers.” I hate a lowball offer as much as the next person, however, this is business and it is not personal.
On average, across the platform, over 60% of Poshamark sales are made via offer. For my Poshmark closet personally, over 70% of my sales come from an offer.
These stats show the power of negotiation and sending/receiving offers. Once you find a gem of an item, one that is within the best brands to sell on Poshmark, you will likely be tempted to stick to your guns and decline any offers.
However, you may want to consider increasing the price to allow room for offers. After all, buyers want to feel like they are getting a good deal and will be more inclined to buy that way.
Now I’m not saying to fire sell everything and deeply discount all of your items. That will depend on your business personally. At this point you should have done the research and know the value of your item. This will guide you with when to sell and when to hold.
Negotiate Better With PosherVA
The moral of the story is that your pricing strategy should leave room to negotiate with buyers in order to increase sales. Luckily this process is automatically done for me with my trusty Poshmark assistant, PosherVA!
PosherVA has been a lifesaver in my business, automatically sending offers to likers on my Poshmark listings while I’m sleeping, eating, on vacation, working on something else, or whatever other life things I am doing outside of reselling.
PosherVA has a free version, along with a free trial of the paid version. Give it a shot. I’m not kidding when I say it will change your reseller life!
Top Brand List Limitations
With all of this being said, lists of the best brands to sell on Poshmark are not foolproof. It is important for each seller to evaluate their current situation and business to sell the items that are right for them.
For whatever reason, some brands sell well for certain sellers and not for others. The brand lists are just guidelines, not 100% guaranteed proven success.
Style Limitations
Just because a brand sells well, does not mean every style or model within that brand will sell well. This requires extra research into specific styles, colors, and other nuances of the item in order to determine if it will sell well.
You can perform this research by searching for the item on Poshmark, filtering the results by “sold”, and seeing what the exact item has historically sold for.
Saturation
Due to the top-selling brands being popular, many users are attracted to buying and selling those items. This may lead to an oversaturation of the product on Poshmark.
When this occurs, and the inventory of the item outweighs the demand, it could lead to slow or absent sales. This is because of all of the competition within that brand or item.
Sellers can attempt to beat this by creating a better listing or offering a better price or discount.
How To Keep Up With Trends
As time passes, trends will come and go. Along with that, popular brands will also come and go. It can be easy to stay within your comfort zone and rinse and repeat your bread-and-butter items.
However, to be a successful reseller and successful Poshmark seller, you have to be willing to continually improve your knowledge and your craft.
So how do we stay up-to-date with the latest fashion trends?
The easiest way is to use your email address and sign up for Poshmark's newsletter. This can be done on the Poshmark website on their blog portion.
After you sign up, you will receive emails with the latest news and trends as it relates to Poshmark. Another way is by staying active on social media to watch what the latest and greatest influencers are endorsing.
The last way is by experimentation. As you continue to either thrift or source online, you will likely come across new brands each time. Perform your own brand research, consider purchasing the item, and track how well that certain brand or style does for you.
In order to do this, make sure you write down the date the item was posted, and watch the number of likes and offers over time to see if it is a success.
