Goodwill Outlet Near Me: Find Your Local Bins

Shopping at the Goodwill Outlet is an experience like no other. These stores, also known as the Goodwill Bins or Goodwill Warehouse, are sister stores to regular Goodwill thrift stores.

Goodwill Outlet stores operate differently than traditional thrift stores in many ways. First, there are no racks of clothing. Instead of racks and shelves, all items are placed in large blue bins (hence- the given name Goodwill Bins).

Due to this, there is a very minimal sense of order in most stores. However, a huge perk is the pricing structure! At the Goodwill Bins, all items are paid for by the pound.

In this blog post, we will discuss everything you need to know about the Goodwill Outlet. This includes what to bring, how to shop, and where to find one of these unique stores near you.

What Is A Goodwill Outlet?

The Goodwill Outlet is a variety of a traditional thrift store. Once you enter the building, you will see a warehouse full of large, raised blue bins on wheels. These bins hold a mixed assortment of items including clothing, shoes, bedding, toys, exercise equipment- you name it.

Most stores separate the textiles into their own bins, with hard goods and shoes also having their exclusive bins. Some locations also have sections for furniture or other miscellaneous items that do not fit into the blue bins.

The outlet stores can receive donations directly from its customers, but most inventory is received from regular Goodwill stores.

After a certain amount of time, inventory is removed from the Goodwill racks and transported to the Goodwill Outlet. Unfortunately after items sit at the Goodwill Bins, they are taken to the landfill.

This is why it is important for shoppers and resellers to support and shop at the Goodwill Outlet due to the mass amounts of perfectly good items being disposed of.

The Goodwill Outlet rotates through inventory at different intervals. Some outlet stores set out the bins for the morning, and close for lunch to rotate new inventory in. Other stores pause shoppers every hour, change out bins, and then let the shopping resume.

For my newbies here, I need to let you know that shopping at the Goodwill Outlet is not for the faint of heart. Many customers take this treasure hunt very seriously.

At times, items can be thrown, you can be bumped into, and people even take items from your cart! To combat others stealing your good finds, I suggest finding a blanket to lay over the top of your cart to block any wandering eyes.

Pricing

Each location and its pricing structure varies. Goodwill Bins locations price most of their items by the pound. In some stores, books and other media are priced per inch.

Additionally, some stores outline pricing differences between glassware/home goods and clothing items. Since glassware items can be pretty heavy, typically those items are priced less per pound.

Further, some stores offer a decreased price depending on how many pounds you purchase. For example, some stores decrease the price per pound if you rack up 25 pounds or more of items.

What To Bring

When planning your trip to the Goodwill Bins, there are a few things you will want to bring. First, you may want to consider wearing gloves.

This is a safety precaution due to an unknown array of different substances on the items. You can opt for rubber gloves, or a more sturdy pair of gloves.

I typically recommend the latter, a thicker pair of gloves. This is because unfortunately there can be sharp objects (glass, etc) located in the bins. This happens because items can be randomly thrown into the blue bins, and staff are unaware of any hazards that may be in the bin.

I also suggest shoppers to bring a reusable tote bag. Even better, a rolling bag on wheels for ease of storing and moving your items as you shop. A rolling bag can especially be important on busy days when there are no carts left.

Lastly, I recommend bringing a water bottle and a snack. These can come in handy on those long days of sifting through items, and while there is down time as you wait for the bins to rotate.
