If you’ve shopped or sold at Plato’s Closet before, you know that it is a secondhand store. That’s right, pre-loved clothing, shoes, and other accessories fill the racks.
Almost all of the inventory at Plato’s Closet comes from customers selling to the store. Because of that, you’re probably wondering, does Plato’s Closet wash the clothes that come in?
As a previous employee of Plato’s Closet for four years, I know all of the ins and outs of the store operations. So, in this post, I’ll be answering your burning question about Plato’s Closet and if they wash the inventory they receive.

Does Plato’s Closet Clean The Items They Buy?
When it comes to the question, does Plato’s Closet wash clothes, the short answer is: no. Plato’s Closet does not wash the clothing items or shoes that customers sell to the store.
As a past employee of Plato’s Closet, I know that there is no washer and/or dryer hidden in the back room or the break room of Plato’s Closets.
But now the question is, why does Plato’s Closet opt to not wash the clothes they accept? Find out in the next section.
Plato’s Closet Selection Process
Plato’s Closet asks that all customers bring in only freshly laundered items when selling. This store only purchases items that are in excellent condition and free of any stains or odors.
Plus, if you think about it, many people are donating clean items from their closets, not dirty items off of their backs. For me personally, many Plato’s Closet selling trips are inspired by a good old closet cleanout.
However, if an item comes in that has a defect or an odor, the item will not be accepted into the store. If it is an item that could potentially be accepted, the selling customer is advised to return home and wash the item(s) themselves.
Although Plato’s Closet doesn’t wash the clothes that come in, don’t let that deter you! There are so many gems to be found that will just need a quick wash after you’ve purchased the item.
Does Plato’s Closet Fix or Repair Items?
Sometimes an item or two with a defect may slip through during the buying process. After all, nobody is perfect!
If that is the case, some stores may opt to sell the item as-is. Other times, an employee may attempt to repair the item.
In my experience as an employee, my manager would spot-treat items and repair small holes, depending on the item. Otherwise, items would be sold as-is for a discounted rate, or put on clearance for an upcoming sale.
Can I Get A Discount For A Dirty Item?
Most of the time, items will be marked and priced as-is. Although, it doesn’t hurt to ask!
See if you can find an employee to ask. Describe the defect, and ask if you can receive a discount for it.
If you can, see if there is someone at the buy counter doing the processing of buys. Those employees are referred to as Keyholders and generally have the ability to approve or decline discounts.
So, now you know that Plato’s Closet does not wash the clothes that come in. Because of that, be sure to wash and or clean and disinfect items that you purchase from the store.
