Does Plato’s Closet Buy Shein?
The short answer is: it depends. Some Plato’s Closet locations accept Shein. However, a majority do not.
Plato’s Closet is a franchise business with each and every location being individually owned and operated. Because of that, every store has the ability to set its own buying guidelines.
That means that it will depend on the store if Shein is accepted. Most stores, however, do not purchase Shein.
The rationale behind this is multifactorial. We will discuss the different factors in the next few sections of this post.
Shein Quality
First, with the mass production of items at Shein, items can be poorly made with low-quality materials.
Due to that, items may not pass the quality inspection at Plato’s Closet. Items must have no rips, tears, holes, or any other imperfections.
Shein Cost
Many also know that Shein offers clothing at an extremely affordable price. Since Plato’s Closet advertises that they price items 70% below retail price, it can be difficult to come to a fair price point.
Due to some tops and dresses costing only a few dollars at Shein itself, Plato’s Closet can have a hard time pricing with a fair margin where the seller receives a sufficient payout. That is because Plato's Closet pays the sellers about 30% of what they price the item at in-store.
So, for example, if a Shein dress is priced at $6, the seller will only receive about $1.80.
Impacts Of Fast Fashion
Arguably the biggest reason for Plato’s Closet not taking Shein is due to the impacts of fast fashion. Companies like Shein raise ethical concerns regarding worker’s rights and fair payment.
Plus, the mass overproduction of new clothing items into circulation, also raises environmental concerns. Plato’s Closet aims to be a store that lessens the environmental impact.
From buying and selling pre-owned items, to no longer issuing plastic bags, purchasing fast fashion brands like Shein does not align with their eco-conscious mission.
What About Other Fast Fashion Brands?
When it comes to other fast fashion brands, like Boohoo, Fashion Nova, and even Forever 21 and H&M, it also depends. Many stores have strict guidelines and refrain from purchasing any item that is affiliated with a fast fashion brand name.
At the end of the day, when it comes to the question, does Plato’s Closet take Shein, there is no one right answer. To get to the bottom of it once and for all, be sure to reach out to your local Plato’s Closet via phone or social media.
