Types Of Mail
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is the largest delivery service in the nation. It services individual residences along with Post Office (PO) Boxes.
In general, USPS offers its customers many options for sending and receiving packages and mail pieces. These shipping services include:
- Regular mail/letters
- USPS Priority Mail
- USPS Priority Mail Express
- First Class Mail
- USPS Retail Ground
Many find enjoyment in watching the tracking on their USPS package progress from being shipped, to arriving at the hub, to out for delivery. So now let's get to the good stuff and figure out if your package will be delivered on Sunday.
Is Regular Mail Delivered On Sundays?
No.
The United States Postal Service does not operate on Sundays as they normally do throughout the week. You should not expect to see your mail carrier walking around with their mailbag going from house to house.
Therefore, regular mail like letters, cards, and bills will not be delivered on Sunday. However, you can expect to see your mail carrier out driving in the van delivering one-off packages.

Will My Amazon Packages Arrive On Sunday?
Yes!
Good news! If you're an Amazon Prime member, you can rejoice because USPS will deliver your Amazon package on Sunday. This practice stems back to 2013 when Amazon and USPS made a deal regarding delivery practices.
Through this partnership, USPS coordinates with Amazon to receive some of its customer's packages. Due to the quick, one or two-day turnaround time, that means some packages have to be delivered on Sunday.
Can I Expect My USPS Priority Mail Express Package?
Yes!
Just like with Amazon packages, you can also expect your USPS Priority Mail Express shipments to be delivered on Sunday. USPS advertises this service as being deliverable 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Priority Express also has the perk of a money-back guarantee on their next-day to two-day shipping time. If the package is not delivered within the guaranteed timeframe, you are eligible to get your money back.
Being eligible for a refund is only after the package is not delivered on time, which is by 6 pm on the guaranteed delivery date as promised by USPS.
With that being said, the convenience and speed of the service comes with a price. The starting price for mailing an item with Priority Mail Express, also known as overnight delivery, is $28.75.
The cost increases as the size of the envelope or parcel increases. Additionally, to ensure Sunday and Holiday delivery, you must include the added fee of $12.50 to the shipping cost.
However, if you need to send or receive something quickly, the additional fee will be worth it.
Does USPS Priority Mail Deliver On Sunday?
No.
USPS Priority mail service is also a speedy option, advertising a ship time of 1-3 business days. It is important to note this timeline only includes business days. Therefore, your USPS Priority Mail package will not be delivered on Sunday.
USPS Priority Mail continues to be a more cost-effective option with prices ranging from $9.65 to $10.40 for envelopes and $10.20 to $22.80 for boxes.
Will My First Class Package Be Delivered?
No.
USPS First-Class Mail is not deliverable on Sundays either. That is because First-Class Mail includes the standard letters as mentioned earlier.
Therefore, no envelopes being sent with stamps will be delivered on Sunday. This also includes packages that are sent via First-Class.
USPS First-Class continues to be more cost-effective than both USPS Priority Mail and USPS Priority Mail Express. The price widely varies, depending on the weight of the mailpiece.
The price increases incrementally with each ounce. That is, up until the weight cutoff for this service, which is 13 ounces.
Should I Expect My USPS Retail Ground To Arrive?
No.
If the merchant shipping your item used USPS Retail Ground as their service, your package will not be delivered on Sunday.
This package delivery option is good for bulkier items that are in no rush to get to their destination. Packages can be expected to arrive in 2-5 business days with a cost starting at $8.95.
Will My Media Mail Package Be Delivered On Sunday?
No.
If you ordered a book, printed music, CD, manuscript, or other forms of qualifying media, you will have to wait until Monday to receive your item.
Due to Media Mail being one of the most affordable options for shipping items, Sunday delivery is not included. It does not have the option to upgrade the package to include Sunday delivery either.
How Does USPS Saturday Delivery Work?
Luckily USPS Saturday delivery operates extremely similar, if not the same, as normal Monday through Friday operations at USPS. You can expect your Priority Mail Express and Priority Mail packages to be delivered on Saturday.
First Class, Media Mail, and USPS Retail Ground packages and envelopes may or may not be delivered on Saturday. USPS has made no direct delineation on these services and Saturday delivery.
In general, in most metropolitan areas, you can expect to see your letter carriers walking from mailbox to mailbox with letters and packages just as you would on any weekday. The only caveat is that delivery times may vary from any other day of the week.
Additionally, mail services needed by going to the post office may be limited. Some post offices limit their Saturday hours to either open late and/or close early. Be sure to check your local post office hours before arriving.
Holiday Delivery
Due to federal holidays, you may experience delays during the holiday season with the delivery of your mail or packages. However, you can expect holiday delivery to operate the same as the Sunday delivery guidelines outlined above.
That means USPS Priority Mail Express packages and Amazon packages will be delivered on a holiday.
USPS observes the following federal holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. birthday
- Presidents’ Day
- Memorial Day
- Juneteenth National Independence Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Columbus Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Additionally, you must be especially aware when the federal holiday falls on a Sunday. If this is the case, the holiday will officially be observed by USPS on the following day, Monday.
That means regular mail delivery will not be available. However, you can expect your Priority Mail Express or Amazon package as scheduled.
Picking Up Your Package On Sunday
If you utilize the services to pick up your packages from the post office, you will have to wait until Monday. On Sundays and federal holidays, all post office locations are closed to the public.
Be especially mindful, again, if the federal holiday falls on a Sunday. If this is the case, you will not be able to visit the post office Sunday or Monday due to the holiday being observed formally on Monday.
USPS Informed Delivery Tool
Have you heard of USPS Informed Delivery? If not, then listen close! USPS offers a service to notify its customers of the mail they will be receiving on a daily basis along with projections for future mail.
That way, you will know if you can expect your package to be delivered with USPS Sunday delivery.
This free service sends an email to your inbox each morning with a preview of the mail you will be receiving that day. It includes scanned pictures of the mail pieces and letters you can expect in your mailbox.
Additionally, it provides the tracking number for packages you are expected to receive that day. Plus, it has a section for packages “arriving soon”, notifying you of packages that are expected to arrive in the coming days.
This service is also a safeguard for the security of your mail. From the email, you can go onto your dashboard to see the mail that was to be delivered to your house over the past week.
You are able to check a box that states “I didn’t receive this mailpiece”. Then, that information will be disclosed for law enforcement and investigative purposes if you were to suspect your mail has been lost or stolen.
In order to access this service, create a USPS account and sign up for Informed Delivery. You can unsubscribe from the feature at any time.
How To Get FREE Shipping Supplies
As we talked about earlier, USPS has Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express options for shipping. If you choose to ship an item with either of these two services, did you know that you can get free envelopes and boxes?
That’s right, there’s no catch here. 100% free. You can pick up free boxes if you visit your local post office. Although this may feel like stealing, it’s true! Just make sure the box or envelope says Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express.
Other than picking up the supplies in person, you can do my preferred way: order the supplies from the comfort of your couch and have them show up on your doorstep.
To do this, navigate to the USPS website. In the Quick Tools section of the dropdown bar, find where it says Free Boxes.
Either create an account or sign in, enter your shipping address, and USPS will handle the rest! Your mailperson will deliver your boxes/envelopes to your door during regular mail delivery.
In summary, only Priority Mail Express items and select Amazon deliveries qualify for Sunday mail delivery.
If you are urgently needing to send or receive an item over the weekend, you may need to pay up for the Priority Mail Express service. Otherwise, you can use a more cost-effective option and wait it out until Monday.
